RWA, Grade II* Listed, Bristol

In June 2019 the RWA was successful in securing a NLHF Round 1 grant towards a £3.23m capital and audience engagement project, ‘Light and Inspiration’. The project will undertake urgent and vital works to safeguard the future of one of Bristol’s best-loved institutions, the RWA, which has been nurturing new talent and championing equal opportunities for 160 years.

By undertaking urgent repairs and improvements to the Grade II* building, the project will protect and revitalise this important regional gallery. Work includes replacing the roof lanterns above the main galleries, which are at risk of collapse and cause extreme temperature fluctuations which deter visitors, threatening income and sustainability. Transforming first impressions will attract and enable more people to engage with the exceptional galleries, exhibitions and collections through remodelling the forecourt, opening up the facade and enhancing physical access. Meanwhile, partnerships with CreativeShift, Happy City and Creative Youth Network will deliver creativity and wellbeing to new audiences, including those experiencing mental and physical health challenges, young people and minority groups, across Bristol and beyond. The project completed in 2022, and PHD acted as project managers throughout.

Kingsley Hall, Grade II* Listed, Bristol

Kingsley Hall is a Grade II* Listed building situated in Old Market in the centre of Bristol. Sections of the building date back to the Medieval times and it has a rich history including its role as a Conservative Club and then headquarters of the Independent Labour Party. The building has been occupied by 1625 Independent People, a charity working to prevent youth homelessness in young people, for 25 years. The charity have received National Lottery Heritage Funding to transform the building into a space that better serves the needs of the young people of Bristol facing homelessness. A 7 year consultation period has been ongoing to ensure the project really does provide a space that supports the charity and the young people that it helps.

In addition to the complete refurbishment and alteration of the property, an additional floor will also be added to create affordable homes for the local area and this will be part funded by Bristol City Council’s affordable housing scheme. The professional team were appointed in early 2023 to deliver this complex and historically important project. PHD are providing Project Management services and have been responsible for tendering and appointing the full design team from fire engineers to specialist conservation architects to accessibility consultants. The scheme has also required PHD to undertake design and specification elements such as scoping the initial round of investigative works and tendering these with local contractors to specify suitable remedial works to Party Walls as well as to suspected dry rot outbreaks.

These have varied in value and complexity, and include the replacement of fire doors and the introduction of fire stopping, the refurbishment of the 1805 private members bar and lounges, and currently the refurbishment and reconfiguration of ground and first floor offices. Our role with the Theatre has varied from managing a full design team to acting as contract administrator and preparing all contract design and specification documents on the clients behalf.
